Introducing Manual Mode

You spoke, so we listened. NIGHTWATCH® is excited to announce a new manual alert mode that makes NIGHTWATCH® easier to use immediately out-of-the-box. So, what’s the difference between this new manual mode and our EDI® smart mode? Let’s find out.

 

Setting a smart alert on your NIGHTWATCH® device

 

Smart Mode

Smart mode, also known as EDI® mode, is our bread and butter. In this mode, NIGHTWATCH® alerts you when there is a change in your horse’s typical physiology. This means that NIGHTWATCH® learns your animal’s normal biometrics and behaviors, and looks for deviation that correlates with distress. 

To simplify distress, we have created a 10-point scale that measures the relative severity of your horse’s pain/distress. This scale is offered exclusively by NIGHTWATCH® and is known as the Equine Distress Index® (EDI®). Through the use of artificial intelligence to create this unique measure tailored to each horse, this scale gives you a quick picture of how your horse is doing. The lower their EDI®, the happier and healthier they are. 

Because NIGHTWATCH® needs to learn your horse’s normal parameters, smart mode requires a learning period that can take up to 30 days. This learning period also requires your horse to be healthy and in their normal environment vs in an elevated distress state (at home in their stall/paddock vs at a show). Smart mode is recommended for long-term consistent use on a specific horse.

 

 

Manual Mode

Manual mode is a new feature of NIGHTWATCH® and is designed for immediate out-of-the-box use on healthy and/or sick horses. In this mode, you now have ultimate control to set your own thresholds for any of the 4 parameters to trigger an alert. These parameters include heart rate, respiratory rate, number of rolls, and total time spent lying down recumbently. In this mode, you simply select your desired parameter(s) and then set your own threshold(s). In the example above, caretakers would be alerted if the heart rate is above 60 bpm or there are more than 5 rolls.

Manual mode makes it possible to move your NIGHTWATCH® device to a new horse in an acute need. This mode is particularly useful in veterinary clinics or post-operative recovery for high-risk horses. Manual mode is also great for breeding operations with broodmares that have not been able to complete a full learning period, as well as barns when you want a little more insight on a suspect horse (a horse that appears to have an upset stomach).

 

 

No matter which mode you choose, your horse’s care team of up to 5 people can all be alerted at the same time via call, text, and/or email. In the example above, if the defined thresholds for either heart rate or roll count is breached, then Rachel will receive a text and email while Frank simultaneously receives a call and Bill receives a text. If neither of them acknowledge this alert and unlock the device, the device will automatically reset after 1 hour. A summary of all alerts are available within the Web app to ensure transparency across your horse’s care team.
