What data does NIGHTWATCH® report?

NIGHTWATCH® reports median 5-minute values on a horse’s biometrics (heart rate, respiration), behavior (activity level), and EDI® score (1-10) over 15-minute, 60-minute, 12-hour, and 24-hour windows within the Summary tab of the NIGHTWATCH® App. Visit the History tab to select a specific date or time for a comparative overview of a horse’s biometrics, behavior, and EDI® scores on an hourly, daily, and weekly basis.

How frequently is data reported by NIGHTWATCH®?

NIGHTWATCH® checks in and posts device status, behavior, and EDI® scores (if available) every ~5 minutes when the smart halter™ is connected to a wireless (WiFi or cellular) network. Due to the on/off cadence of the ultra-wideband impulse radar (UWB-IR) radar, biometric data is posted every ~15 minutes unless an alert threshold is breached at which time biometric data is reported ~5 minutes. If you are a veterinarian in need of a different reporting frequency, please contact Customer Care to discuss options.

Can I export NIGHTWATCH® data?

As the administrator of a NIGHTWATCH® device and/or horse, you can share view-only access to anyone with a NIGHTWATCH® account via the NIGHTWATCH® App, but you are not able to export data directly from the App. If you are a researcher in need of a *.csv or *.xlsx export of data, please contact Customer Care to discuss options. Automated data integration with practice management software is an area for future development.

How does NIGHTWATCH® collect biometric data?

NIGHTWATCH® uses a UWB-IR sensor to monitor a horse’s heart rate and respiration. UWB-IR is a safe and very low energy radiofrequency technology that measures physical changes in a horse’s vasculature and soft tissue that correlate with their heart rate and respiration.

How accurate is heart rate data reported by NIGHTWATCH®?

NIGHTWATCH® has been evaluated by veterinarians and tested head-to-head against an electrocardiogram (ECG) and compared manually with a stethoscope for an accepted +/- 2 beat variance when measuring a horse’s resting heart rate. As is similar with an ECG and other technologies and techniques, results are optimized when there is limited motion by the animal.

How is NIGHTWATCH® different from an ECG?

An ECG is a tool used to see how the heart is functioning at rest by placing electrodes on the body surface. It mainly records how often the heart beats (heart rate) and how regularly it beats (heart rhythm) by measuring the time interval for electrical waves to travel through the heart. By contrast, UWB-IR is a new noninvasive technology that does not require any contact with the body surface. It measures the time of flight for radio waves sent at specific time intervals to be transmitted over short distances and reflected back off a target object, which in the case of NIGHTWATCH® is hypothesized to be the vascular bed at a horse’s poll (for heart rate) and soft tissue surrounding a horse’s nasopharynx region (for respiration).

How do I care for my NIGHTWATCH® device?

The NIGHTWATCH® smart halter™ is durable, but does contain sensitive electronic components so appropriate care should be given to ensure longevity and proper functionality. Although all embedded technology is enclosed within a flexible, water- and dust-resistant enclosure, excessive water exposure and submersion should be avoided. NIGHTWATCH® has been tested and successfully treated within a gas sterilizer while powered off.

How do I use NIGHTWATCH® across multiple horses?

Your team can use a single NIGHTWATCH® smart halter™ among multiple horses by transferring it via the NIGHTWATCH® App. This will allow you to have a personalized profile for each respective horse that includes customized alerts, careteam members, and more. If your clinic has multiple smart halters™, you will be able to view them all within one dashboard on the NIGHTWATCH® App.
